CommQueR.com is proud to be a Digital Privacy Day Champion! As we care about backups so do we care about digital data privacy and integrity because it is an essential part of the backup strategy especially when you consider sending your data off-site.

What is Data Privacy Day?

As good net citizens we should care about privacy. With social networks, cookies and tracking all over the place that gather information about us we should at least be aware of those actions: when you’re on the web you’ll always leave a digital footprint, so you might as well learn to control it. But here is what Digital Privacy Day is in their own words:

Data Privacy Day is an effort to empower people to protect their privacy and control their digital footprint and escalate the protection of privacy and data as everyone’s priority.

Digital Privacy
If you cannot imagine where digital privacy plays any role in your life, here are some examples that I’m sure you’ve used in the past:

Facebook

We all love Facebook to connect with our friends, family and colleagues. But let’s be honest: they do not treat our privacy as well as they should be. And the worst part: we’re willing to acknowledge it freely because this service gives as so much perceived freedom. You should closely monitor your privacy settings that only the people you really want to have access to your personal data. Now, this is not a rant against Facebook. We just want to make people aware of the fact that they shouldn’t carelessly share anything on the web and they are not anonymous contrary to common belief.

  • Always monitor your privacy settings

Location Based Services

Do you own an iPhone? Then you’ve probably made use of location based services like Maps or you were just looking for the next decent Deli. Probably you’ve even paid your last caffè latte at Starbucks with your phone. While that seems to be “very little data” about you, in the grand scheme of things large corporations will tailor usage patterns out of your behavior to cater to your needs. While that is not necessarily a bad thing, one should always be aware of that fact to gauge which information you want to share. Here it is also advisable to have a look at the privacy setting within your phone and potentially disable location based services if you don’t feel comfortable that companies might track you.

  • Be aware that corporations, large or small, will track your behavior if you let them to

Online Banking and Transations

You should take special care about your privacy online when it comes to monetary transactions between you and third parties. When you buy something online always make sure you’re connected through a SSL connection that you can identify at the “https://” handler where the “s” stands for security and it means that your connection is encrypted. While that is important and keeps you quite safe, you should not forget about your privacy at all: take special care about your passwords and do not store them in plain text on your computer.

  • Make sure you’re connected via SSL when buying or banking online

These are only a couple of relevant topics about data privacy. As we use those services on a daily basis we tend to forget its implications. Data Privacy Day is about raising this awareness back into our minds and we’re proud to show our support of that initiative!

Digital Privacy Day is held every year on January 28th, be sure to show your support!

What’s your take on data privacy? What precautions do you take? Have you thought about your digital privacy before?
