EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard Review

EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard is a thorough piece of data recovery software that will even impress IT professionals looking to sharpen their edge. It would beat the competition except for a few tiny flaws. Read our full EaseUS review for the details on that.

Best data recovery software

EaseUS produces a strong lineup of data utilities that are both powerful enough to meet the needs of IT professionals and easy enough to use for everyone else. During this review, we’ll be examining its data recovery solution, Data Recovery Wizard.

Available for both Windows and Mac, EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard will help you recover both accidentally deleted files and files erased by programs. It can also be used access non-mounting, raw or corrupted partitions. Advanced users will appreciate its ability to recover data from servers and RAID storage, as well.

Overall, the user experience stands as one of the best of any recovery utility we reviewed, ranking it near the top of our 2017 roundup for best data recovery software.

Unfortunately, the service lacks one major function, preventing it from beating Stellar or Prosoft Engineering (read our Prosoft Engineering Data Rescue review) as the best all-around recovery tool: it can’t scan your full hard drive, only partitions. We’ll look at the implications of this later on in this review.

We’ll also examine EaseUS’s otherwise strong feature set, interface, performance and support network.

Pricing & Licensing

75 % – Good

For average Windows consumers, the best EaseUS software is called Data Recovery Wizard Pro for Windows + WinPE. “WinPE” lets you recover data from computers that won’t start due to issues with their boot partitions. The Mac version is called Data Recovery Wizard Pro for Mac with Bootable Media.

Both Windows and Mac users can opt for a cheaper option that doesn’t include a recovery CD. EaseUS also provides recovery software for iPhones and Android devices. Besides regular consumer plans, there are pricier licenses aimed at IT professionals.

EaseUS provides trial versions of its software, which can be used to recover up to 2GB of data on PCs and Macs. A trial run will help you determine if your lost data can be recovered prior to purchasing the software. Because it offers a trial version, EaseUS’ 30-day refund policy doesn’t apply to non-technical circumstances, so be sure you know what you’re buying.

Features

85 % – Very Good

The following table outlines the essential features you get with an EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard Pro license.

While the feature list looks impressive, there are some noticeable things missing. Some of these are available through separate software packages available from EaseUS. These features include the ability to clone your hard drive and create a bootable disc or USB for when a computer won’t start at all.

Other features that aren’t offered at all by EaseUS include the ability to add new recoverable file types and the ability to recover data from optical storage (CDs, DVDs).

As far as supported file types, EaseUS covers all of the basics:

  • Documents: Word, Excel, Powerpoint, PDF
  • Images: JPEG, PNG, RAW, Photoshop, Illustrator
  • Audio: MP3, WAV, AIFF, AAC, Ogg
  • Videos: MPEG-4, QuickTime, AVI, WMV
  • Archives: Zip, Gzip, RAR, Stuffit

Supported file systems include:

  • Windows: FAT, NTFS
  • Mac: HFS, HFS+
  • Removable Storage: ExFat

Recovery Process

90 % – Excellent

Next, we examine the general recovery process using Data Recovery Wizard Pro for Windows. The overall experience with the Mac version of the software is similar. Once the application opens, step one requires picking a scan location.

You can choose to scan your desktop, Windows libraries, a specific partition or an external drive. If you’re dealing with a non-mounting or deleted partition, Data Recovery Wizard will display those, too, by pulling information from the partition table. Unlike most data recovery tools, you don’t need to run a full hard drive scan first.

Beyond that, the choices are a bit more limited here than we’d like. With Stellar, for example, you can pick the type of file you want to scan for or indicate a specific folder (read our full Stellar Data Recovery review for more details). Doing so lets you limit how long the total scan takes to run.

There’s also no option with EaseUS to scan the entire hard drive. Pick the partition you want to work with and hit “scan.” Data Recovery Wizard will automatically execute a quick scan then launch a deep scan. While scanning, the program displays a progress bar at the top of the application, along with a countdown of how much time it remains before completion.

You can browse and preview files before the scan completes, as they’re recovered or wait until it’s over. The preview capability helps, since recovered files are given generic names, as with most data recovery tools for Windows. However, a file size cap of 100MB limits its usefulness.

Once the scan has completed, you can browse content by file tree, file category (graphics, audio, document, video, email, other) and search for files. Search is handy because you can search for a specific file type by searching for an extension (.txt, .jpg).

Content that you’ve personally deleted will be in the “recycle bin” folder. Content that deleted via other means, such as a program, can be found in a special folder marked, “more lost files (RAW).”

Recovering content is simple. Just click the checkbox beside the file name, hit the “recover” button and select a recovery location. That location must be a separate partition or drive, and you may choose an external drive.

Performance

80 % – Good

To find how EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard stacked up against the competition, we executed some basic recovery tests during our review process. Basic deleted file recovery testing was run on a 518GB, NTFS-formatted partition with 379GB of used space. For this testing, three test files were created and deleted: a Word document, a .jpg file and an .mp4 video.

We also tested recovery of a 10GB test partition that we created, loaded with data and deleted.

Have a look at our results:

Data Recovery Wizard’s quick scan runs in just a few seconds. The results that came back were limited, though. The scan seems to only check to see if there’s any recently deleted content it can recover. Most quick scans build out entire directory structures of intact files, as well.

It’s okay that Data Recovery Wizard is different.

It just means EaseUS took a different approach in building its quick scan algorithm. The real test of how thorough a data recovery tool performs lies in its deep scan results. The deep scan completed in under two hours. That’s faster than average and still returned everything we were looking for.

Customer Support

90 % – Excellent

EaseUS might be the best overall data recovery tool when it comes to support. The service offers a thorough knowledge base that includes a downloadable user manual, searchable support articles and video tutorials. The biggest plus, though, is the inclusion of live chat support.

That’s an advantage you won’t find with low-end data recovery services.

Live chat, available during business hours, will put you in almost immediate contact with a service representative. Outside of business hours, you can send EaseUS an email. The service promises to get back to you within two hours, and we found that promise held even on weekends.

Unfortunately, the telephone support channel is for pre-sales inquiries, not tech support. However, it’s often easier to communicate technical issues via text than talking, anyway. You can also send EaseUS technical support an email directly from the desktop tool by clicking the “more” icon in the overhead toolbar, then selecting, “contact technical support.”

Final Thoughts

While the experience isn’t perfect, we came away impressed after spending a little too much time playing with EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard. The deep scan performed wasn’t quite as thorough as some services judging by the total files found, but it returned all the files we were looking for.

The ability to recover data from HDDs, SSDs, RAID storage, servers and even optical drives makes it a flexible tool. Complimentary cloning software is also nice, even if it’s a separate application.

In fact, the solution is so comprehensive, if you’re an IT professional, there’s little question in our minds that the EaseUS data recovery lineup will make it an invaluable addition to your toolkit.

Have you use EaseUS? WHat did you think? Let us know in the comments below and thank you for reading.

  1. It’s worth to spend money on this software.

It is very cost-effective and advanced software. you can choose EaseUS mobisaver pro for your Android phone to rescue your data from any disaster.

  2. It did not work for me. It failed to recognize my external hard drive. I made the mistake of paying for the product. The company has a 100% money back guarantee though they stated I failed to prove that the product did not work; thus, I get no refund. I figure if it can’t read my drive, it most likely will not retrieve any data on it.

    1. EaseUS didn’t work for me either and their 100% refund policy is a scam maybe legal in CHINA where they’re from not in North America standards. The software didn’t recover the data and their technician saw it didn’t and then he tried to say that maybe it was lost before it was lost????
      What????
Waste of money, just go into your local repair shop don’t waste your money with those Chinese companies, NO REFUND, They don’t have the same legal privileges we do and they don’t respect the customer, they rather get $70 ones then resell to you those idiots, so don’t waste your time, if you loose your data walk into your local Geek shop and be safe, you know you will get your money back if they don’t recover your data!

      1. Another case of 30 day guarantee that they are not going to deliver on. The product did not find files as they stated either. I wonder if this is a scam to obtain my information fraudulently. I guess I will watch my credit card for those additional fraudulent charges too. My business will no longer be using this companies products

    2. Wish I’d seen this site before I bought. Needed to clone a new SSD and elected free EaseUS. Didn’t work so I upgraded and purchased the product. Huge mistake. Still didn’t work, so turned to the only support offered, “CHAT”! There was no one there, emaled response says they’d get back in a few hours. The following day I received a response suggesting a remote. Turns out the company and their support is located in China (Shanghai area) and they aren’t 24hr. Three days in they suggested a remote at 9PM my time on a Sunday. Needless to say I didn’t wait around and found another product (free 30 day trial that I may indeed purchase) that had me up and running in less than 2 hours. E-US documentation is awful and the graphics don’t match the user interface. I already mentioned the non-existent support, but getting my money back, not happening! Their latest offer (Here is our last suggestion. We can issue a half refund to you. Meanwhile, you could keep the program for future update and we will also offer you a free lifetime technical support). This for software that wouldn’t do the job, whose docs were the worst ever and who’s support is laughable. Told them to keep the money and that I’d educate others on the experience, so here you go. Buyer beware!

      1. I had worst experience with this product. It didn’t work. I lost my work. I could go into more detail about how it failed, and will be pursuing this, but in short, after following the instructions it failed to recover the files and those I did need, were corrupted when restored. InDesign and illustrator files will become useless to you once recovered. I had one of their agents look over things for me and all I got was cut and pasted responses. They ignored the issues and flaws and you’re all correct, their refund policy is a scam. With reference in law to the Trades Description Act, I shall pursue this.

  4. I was totally impressed with this software to recover 2 terabytes of lost data thanks to mostly me being an idiot and wiping the drive. Not only did I reformat the drive from it being originally NTFS I also deleted the original partitions and the drive was repurposed for use with Linux. After looking for the backup drive (the one I had repurposed by accident!) I was horrified to discover I had lost everything until I came across Ease US Data Recovery. I was utterly amazed by the fact that virtually all my files – nearly 32,000 were salvageable thanks to this software. It took a good 13 hours to scan the drive and then another several hours to restore all my content safely back to a new external hard drive however the software perfectly organised and sorted the file types along with a preview to show what was contained within the photos. The software was so easy to use and using the software on the Mac was incredibly robust and it didn’t crash once even though it had been chugging away for nearly 24 hours!!

To say I am impressed is an understatement!

I found a discount coupon on the web and managed to get 50% off at checkout so make sure you google for this prior to ordering this software.

  5. I had accidentally formatted a drive that a client have given my company. OUCH right?! After hyperventilating and drafting a resignation letter in my head, I proceeded to sift through the internet to find the best recovery platform. I decided to roll the proverbial dice on EaseUS, and I have to say the results were incredible. I was able to recover the entire drive (over 2TB of data) including .r3d .mxf and other complex media files. Thanks EaseUS for saving me!

  6. You have got to be kidding. This software flat out does not work. I could not clone disk 1 to 2, only 0 to 1. Then, the cloned drive had three drive letters and required manual intervention (F2) at start up to get it to work. However, they do give free support which consists of making an appointment with them – they are in Western China – and allow them to do a remote session into your machine to make changes. I don’t think so.

  7. I contact Sales Support to see if I should use the data recovery software on an external HD that was reformatted to RAW. They said to use it. Then I asked “What if the files become unrecoverable after using the software, and then I need to send it to a data recovery lab?” All of a sudden, she told me that the software wouldn’t work for me.

  8. Bought a copy of EASEUS DATA RECOVERY and it “found” 1TB of info from a damaged HDD, but when I go to recover the data, it’s all useless. Hundreds of the same file, and Not ONE file that is worth a damn. Just a bunch of junk.

Try and get your money back!? That’s laughable. Multiple emails, with more questions, or “buy this product instead” nonsense.

DO NOT EVER BUY SOMETHING FROM THEM! They are a scam!

They offer a MONEY BACK GUARANTEE but it’s more like:

    “MONEY BACK GUARANTEE”

** EXCEPT WE WILL MAKE YOU JUMP THROUGH HOOPS, REQUEST REMOTE ACCESS, QUESTION YOU, YOUR ABILITY TO PERFORM SIMPLE ACTIONS, CAUSE EVEN MORE AGGRAVATION AND ALL AROUND DICK AROUND WITH YOUR EMOTIONS… BUT THANKS FOR THE MONEY.

  12. It’s a scam!

save your money and don’t buy it, initially it scans your data fully with file names and folders and all! and you will be tempted to buy it then once you purchase the premium version you will discover retrieving data is not that easy!! and it hangs midway each time you try retrieving it will scan again which will take days !

I didn’t get any data out of my external hard disc which was corrupted.

  13. A complete scam. They offer a guarantee that they refuse to pay out on. The software is very difficult to use and I had to use other applications to complete the task. The Customer services based in China (GMT+8) have poor English and ethics. Please don’t use this company.

  14. DO NOT GET THIS PRODUCT.
This is a complete scam. The software did not work. I downloaded the trial version and it seemed like it was reading the files in my troubled hard drive, so I went ahead and purchased the product. After I made the purchase and tried to actually recover the files, I kept getting the ‘disk read failed’ alert window and 0kb was extracted. I made several attempts resulting in the same 0kb extraction. I think it even further damaged my hard drive because eventually, my hard drive was not even detectable.
So I reached out to the customer support and after several email exchanges, they told me they can not issue a refund because my hard drive is not detectable!!!
    Unbelievable and unacceptable.
    DO NOT GET THIS PRODUCT.

  15. Product did not work – though the fault is/was difficult to determine – probably a defective SATA cable/port. The software would not stop scanning after 36+ hours I had to stop it. 4 days into it, I requested a refund. They have refused to issue one. Watch your self with this company and their “money back guarantee”.
My chief complaint is their refusal to refund as advertised. That the software wouldn’t work and I had to move on with the drive is less of a concern for me.
    DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME/MONEY!

  16. An absolute con. I would give zero stars if I could. They state the offer a full refund if the software cannot resolve your problem and I was promised this upon purchase. It could not recover my files and have now requested a refund 3 times, which they are refusing to even acknowledge. As the program couldn’t fix my problem and recover my lost file I had to re-do 14 hours of work so all I want is my money back as promised but my requests are being blatantly ignored by the agent (Warren). AVOID AT ALL COSTS. DAYLIGHT ROBBERY.

  20. The files it recovers are not useable and they will absolutely refuse to refund your money. When you try to get a refund they give you a big run around and then try to take control of your computer and data and refuse your refund. TOTAL SCAM!

  21. So got to use their test program for data recovery, and it worked alright. BUT after paying the $69.95 the program then freezes, puts the recovered files in some giberish language, and can never seem to recovery anything greater than 50GB. So for the casual user who’s saving those family photos, have at it. However, for those who are actually storing significant data stay clear. The cherry on top of this story? Didn’t get the refund even though it’s a 15 day money back guarantee, cause of the most restrictive return policy. Unless the program fries your computer, don’t expect a refund. Also just tried to write a review on amazon (which I didn’t buy through) and 95% of the reviews are 1’s. Because of that couldn’t leave a review there.

I followed all the instructions correctly and it failed me. Then things got worse when asking for a refund. As Bob says.

30 Day Money back Guarantee. That’s a lie.

  23. DO NOT BUY!

Same as the previous folks, this company is a total scam, I used their free service to investigate a missing file on a CFast card I used on a video shoot of a live performance, it said it was there, so I paid $135.95 Canadian to recover it, but upon doing so the file was about 1/16 the size advertised on the scan, and contained information from a completely different part of the show. Perhaps the file was already corrupted but either way, it was a time sensitive issue so I reached out to customer service for support, they said technical support would contact me but did not. I had a tight turnaround for my edit, and when back and reshot the another performance of the same show the night I bought the easeus software, and promptly asked for a refund stating it did not work, and I no longer need it anyway, and how disappointed I was by their customer service.

Their response was that they didn’t get an opportunity to look at it so they can’t confirm if the software is working or not and therefore can’t give me my money back. They DID get a chance to help though and they blew it! Apparently they don’t understand what “time sensitive” means.

I explained all of this to them, emphasizing the lack of customer service alone was reason enough to warrant a refund but they have still said no to the refund. Calling my bank next.

  24. These folks are completely fraudulent. They claim their software works, then when it doesn’t they try to up sell you on getting a manual recovery. I had a failed RAID 0, their software couldn’t do it (Data Rescue 5 had no problem whatsoever), then they tried to have someone do a manual recovery and charge me for it. I stopped them when they didn’t know the difference between RAID 0 and RAID 1 and requested a refund.

They refused my refund because I didn’t read all of their documentation. I am processing a claim with my credit card company to fix that, but I wanted people to know that these people are basically one step above Nigerian scammers.

Do not buy this product, it does not work. Gave it one star because there is no way to get a negative rating.
