MEGA.nz Review

MEGA.nz is one of the best known storage providers out there, with plenty of clouds hanging over its reputation. That said, as far as we can tell, security is top-notch, though we wish it wouldn't pull a bait-and-switch with its free cloud storage. Read our full MEGA review for the details.

MEGA.nz is a cloud storage service focused on security that offers users excellent end-to-end encryption and a great free plan with tons of free storage. However, its history has been marked by controversy, and its zero-knowledge-encryption makes collaboration difficult. Find out more about MEGA, both the good and the bad, in this full MEGA.nz review.

Founded in 2013 as a successor to the infamous Megaupload, MEGA cloud storage was created by the notorious Kim Dotcom. Following the takedown of Megaupload’s servers in Hong Kong, MEGA was incorporated in New Zealand as a cloud service dedicated to the security and privacy of its users’ data.

MEGA has been incredibly popular from the day it launched, gaining 100,000 users within the first hour. Kim Dotcom has since left MEGA, and he’s leveled some serious criticism against it, but we’ll talk more about that later in this MEGA review.

In spite of all its controversy, though, MEGA is still a very secure cloud service, and it’s one of the best choices for anyone looking for lots of free storage space. A free account will get you a whopping 50GB of cloud storage, though it gets reduced to a still-sizeable 15GB after the first month. Because of this, MEGA makes our list of the best free cloud storage services.

Despite MEGA’s spacious free plan, its paid plans are rather pricey and it doesn’t really offer enough cloud storage to make up for the price. There are certainly better alternatives that offer much more storage for a lower price. You can check out our review of Sync.com if you’re looking for a deal that offers top-notch security for a great price.

Features

89 % – Very Good

MEGA.nz’s outstanding feature is its end-to-end encryption. All files that are uploaded to MEGA’s servers are encrypted on the side of the client, meaning the user is the only one who can decrypt their own data. Along with two-factor authentication, this makes for a very secure cloud storage service.

Apart from the excellent security, MEGA has plenty of features — some necessary, others not so much. It offers plenty of sharing features, plus some nice extras, like the chat client. However, it lacks integration with third-party apps, so it’s not very good for collaboration.

01_mega_review_features_picture_preview

What Is MEGA.nz Used For?

MEGA is a secure cloud service that offers robust sharing features. It’s extremely useful for sharing sensitive data, with several layers of protection for your shared links. Everything uploaded to MEGA is encrypted, but each sharing link is also protected by a separate encryption key, and you can even add a password to file sharing links on top of that.

MEGA also offers some good file sharing features. Links to shared files and folders are encrypted with an individual encryption key, which can be sent separately. However, only paid users can set expiration dates and passwords for the links, though the encryption keys function as passwords anyway.

02_mega_review_features_megabird

You can also share folders with anyone with a MEGA account. Sharing folders this way lets you set permissions for the folder, allowing you to choose who can upload to the shared folder, or alter any data inside it.

MEGA’s interface can be a little cluttered at times, and there’s a lot of overlap between its many features, especially when it comes to file sharing. In comparison, Tresorit is a secure cloud storage service that makes file sharing much easier and much less confusing for the user. You can read more about Tresorit and its excellent sharing features in our Tresorit review, and also read our MEGA vs Tresorit comparison.

MEGA for Productivity and Collaboration

MEGA also offers a slew of apps, ranging from the standard desktop and mobile apps to live chat to dedicated apps for sharing large files.

One of these apps is an extension for Mozilla’s Thunderbird email client called MEGAbird. MEGAbird allows you to send large files to people via email, even if they don’t have a MEGA account.

03_mega_review_features_chat

The live chat functionality can be useful for collaboration, as it is also secured by MEGA’s encryption protocol. However, keep in mind that metadata, such as the email address of your contact, remains unencrypted. Chat is available both through the MEGA website and via the mobile app.

MEGA also retains previous versions of any file you have uploaded, so it’s safe from any accidental changes saved to the cloud. Versioning is enabled by default, and files with previous versions are marked with a little clock icon next to them.

MEGA’s strong focus on privacy and security doesn’t leave much room for collaboration options, so integration with third-party apps like Google Docs is impossible. If you need to collaborate on cloud-based files, Google Drive is one of the best options for that.

04_mega_review_features_storage_manager

MEGA’s file management system is fairly comprehensive, with separate tabs for recent and deleted files, incoming and outgoing shares, as well as a storage management tab, where you can view statistics about your cloud storage use. You can also preview images, music and videos, as well as PDF documents.

There’s also a feature called MEGAcmd that allows you to use a command-line interface for advanced management of your personal cloud. Using MEGAcmd and MEGA’s WebDAV integration, you can set up things like scheduled uploads or automatic backups.

Pricing

85 % – Very Good

The main draw of MEGA.nz is its excellent free plan that comes with lots of storage and a generous transfer quota. Additionally, MEGA has four paid plans and a separate business plan. However, these plans are pretty costly and don’t offer any crucial features, so unless you need the larger amounts of storage they offer, there’s not much incentive to upgrade.

Free Account Features

The free plan offers most of MEGA’s functionality, with some exceptions, such as time limits and passwords for links, longer retention periods for deleted files and the ability to grant your monthly transfer quota to other accounts.

It comes with 15GB of permanent storage, plus an additional 35GB that lasts only for your first month. However, there are several ways of expanding your storage.

Installing MEGAsync, MEGA’s desktop app, will get you 20GB of bonus storage, as well as 40GB of transfer. Installing the mobile app gets you an extra 15GB of storage, with a transfer bonus of 30GB. These bonuses last for 180 days.

You can also nab an additional 10GB of bonus storage with 20GB of extra transfer for each friend you invite to MEGA. Each confirmed referral gets you a bonus that lasts for a whole year, so you can easily expand your storage when you need it, at no cost to you.

If you think a free account with MEGA is not for you, you can check out Icedrive, another privacy-minded cloud service with an excellent free plan.

05_mega_review_pricing_rewards

The cheapest upgrade to your MEGA cloud storage account is the Pro Lite plan. It comes with 400GB of cloud storage and 1TB of transfer for a monthly price of $5.39 (4.99 euros). You can also choose to pay a yearly fee, which will bring your tally up to $54.01 (49.99 euros).

Next up is the Pro I plan, which costs $10.79 (9.99 euros) per month or a yearly fee of $108.04 (99.99 euros). It offers 2TB of cloud storage and a 2TB transfer quota.

The Pro II plan comes in at $21.60 (19.99 euros) per month or $216.09 (199.99 euros) per year. This gets you 8TB of cloud storage and a monthly transfer quota of 8TB.

The most expensive plan is the Pro III plan, which costs $32.40 per month (29.99 euros), and it comes with 16TB of transfer and storage space. If you opt for a business account, you get unlimited cloud storage and transfer for the monthly price of $10.80 (10 euros) per user, with a minimum of three users.

These plans aren’t the cheapest around. pCloud offers a lot more storage for a far cheaper price, and it’s an excellent cloud storage service overall. You can read our full pCloud review for more information.

Ease of Use

85 % – Very Good

MEGA’s interface design seems a little dated by today’s standards, with its bold reds and dark contrasting greys. This does help a lot with legibility, though, making everything easy to notice and read.

MEGA has several apps on offer that let the user access the service in different ways. There are the two desktop apps we mentioned, as well as mobile apps for Android and iOS. The browser experience is handled either through the MEGA.nz website or the dedicated add-on for Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox. MEGAbird and MEGAcmd further expand MEGA’s feature set.

06_mega_review_ease_interface_browser

MEGA.nz in the Browser

The browser interface is the main way of using MEGA, and it’s where you’ll find all the necessary tools. There are several tabs to the left for easy navigation, but you’ll be spending most of your time using the “cloud drive” tab. This tab has a navigator on the left side that shows your cloud drive’s folder structure, and your files are displayed on the right side of the screen.

From here you have access to all your files. You can then right-click any file or folder to manage sharing links, as well as move, copy or delete the files, plus you can download or preview them, too. You can use the “file upload” or “folder upload” buttons to upload data to your MEGA cloud storage, but you can also just drag and drop them into the browser window to upload.

07_mega_review_ease_interface_desktop

MEGA on Desktop and Mobile

The desktop experience is mainly handled through the MEGAsync app. Installing the app creates a MEGA folder on your computer where all your data is synced. While installing the app, you can choose whether to sync all folders or only select folders.

The MEGAsync app appears as a taskbar icon on Windows. The app functions mainly as a transfer manager that allows you to upload and download files and folders, as well as manage your synced folders. The app also lets you stream files while your computer is online, functioning like a peer-to-peer service.

08_mega_review_ease_interface_mobile_app

One small issue with the app is that there is no back button, meaning that whenever you open a menu, you have to click away and then reopen the app from the taskbar. That can get annoying really fast if you have a lot of work to do in the app.

The mobile app functions just like any other mobile cloud service app. You can upload and download files, send links and move files around. Turning on “media upload” will automatically upload your photos and videos to MEGA, plus MEGA’s chat feature is also accessible through the mobile app.

Usability Issues

Since its launch, MEGA has added a ton of features, but neither the interface nor existing features have been updated accordingly. This has created some overlap between features that can leave users confused about which app to install or which sharing feature to use.

For example, there are multiple ways to delete a file, either through the “move” option, where you can choose to move a file to the “rubbish bin,” or the “remove” option that does the same thing.

You also can’t create upload links for folders, but you can turn them into MEGAdrop folders, which lets anyone with the link upload to it. However, you can’t share download links for MEGAdrop folders without them reverting to regular folders. This could have been resolved by simply allowing the user to create upload links, but instead there are overlapping features.

There are also two different apps for desktop: one that you can install as a regular desktop app and one that you can get from the Microsoft Store. This feature overlap creates a confusing user experience that can be disorientating for new users, especially those who aren’t particularly tech savvy, so you might not want to recommend MEGA to your older relatives.

All the clutter is especially visible when comparing the service to Dropbox, which has one of the most polished user experiences for a cloud storage service. You can find out more about it in our Dropbox review. It’s one of the easiest cloud services to use and is a departure from MEGA’s cluttered interface.

File Sharing & Syncing

90 % – Excellent

MEGA.nz offers a full file-sharing feature set, with only some minor things missing. There are many ways to share files and folders and even some interesting and unique features that the competition doesn’t offer.

The main way of sharing files is by sending links, which you can create with the “get link” option. Each link is encrypted, and the encryption keys can be sent separately. Plus, you can set passwords and expiration dates for links to make them more secure.

10_mega_review_sharing_link

You can also use the “sharing” option to share files, but this one is more useful for folders because it lets you set permissions for different users. You can set an individual recipient’s permissions to “read-only,” “read and write” or “full access.” However, this option lets you share things only with someone who has a MEGA account.

To let someone without a MEGA cloud storage account upload to your folder, you can turn that folder into a MEGAdrop folder. This will let anyone with the MEGAdrop folder’s link upload to it.

The only things missing from MEGA’s sharing functionality are setting download limits for links and restricting separate users from accessing linked files, though the encryption keys and password protection should take care of the last part well enough.

11_mega_review_sharing_email

You can also stream files using the desktop app’s “stream” option. This creates a stream link that will be online only while your computer is streaming the file. This lets people with the link download the streamed file or preview it if it’s a media file or a PDF document. The stream is only live while you are online, and once you stop the stream, the file is no longer available.

MEGA.nz Sync

The MEGAsync app creates a sync folder on your hard drive on installation, and this is where all your files are synced. You can choose which folders to sync, and you can even sync existing folders to your MEGA cloud storage account.

12_mega_review_sharing_megadrop_folder

Syncing folders is easy and it’s done via the desktop app’s system tray icon. You can select which folder to sync by clicking the “syncs” option in the app’s dot menu, and then selecting “add sync.” You can then choose a folder from your hard drive to sync to the cloud, and you can choose which folder on your MEGA cloud account to sync to, or you can create a new cloud folder for it.

MEGA doesn’t offer block-level sync, though, which means syncing an altered file will require reuploading the whole file, instead of only the parts that changed, which makes syncing data slightly slower than some competitors.

Speed

55 % – Fair

 First attemptSecond attemptAverageExpected time
Upload:51:5653:4852:5223:40
Download:05:1604:5905:0804:30

MEGA isn’t particularly known for its speed. In fact, in our MEGA review testing, upload speeds were subpar, though downloads were speedy enough. We tested MEGA.nz using a 1GB test file with an upload speed of around 6 Mbps and a download speed of 32 Mbps.

During our upload test, it took MEGA a few seconds to register the actual upload speed and start the uploading process. When it did, speeds were far from impressive, with the full upload taking around 52 minutes; more than twice the expected upload time of around 24 minutes.

14_mega_review_speed_upload

However, downloads were fast, with the 1GB test file taking on average just over five minutes to download, while the expected download time was around four and a half minutes.

Unfortunately, the abysmal upload speed, coupled with the fact that there is no block-level sync, means that working on large files in the cloud is very impractical with MEGA. However, pCloud offers block-level sync and fast uploads to the cloud, so if your business depends on working with large cloud-based files, it may be a good alternative for you.

MEGA’s servers are located in several locations around the world, specifically in New Zealand, Canada, Germany, the Netherlands and France, so your speeds may vary depending on how close you are to these servers.

Security

98 % – Excellent

Security is what MEGA prides itself on, and it’s one of its best features. MEGA is one of only a handful of cloud storage services that provide end-to-end zero-knowledge encryption. The best part is that it offers its encryption services at no cost at all, unlike most other storage services.

MEGA encrypts all of your data client-side, so you are the only one holding the encryption keys. This means that neither MEGA nor any malicious actor has a way to access your data without your consent.

The encryption protocol that MEGA uses is the standard 128-bit AES encryption for your at-rest files, plus it encrypts your data while in transit using the TLS protocol, also with 128-bit AES. This means that your files are secure both while on the MEGA.nz servers and while being uploaded or downloaded, so your data is safe from man-in-the-middle attacks.

MEGA uses two-factor authentication to add an extra layer of security for your login. This means that even someone with your account data will not be able to log in to your account and compromise your private data.

MEGA should be a safe place to store all of your private data because the client-side end-to-end encryption ensures the privacy of your files, even if someone gains access to your data. All of this makes the MEGA cloud service very secure.

15_mega_review_security_recovery_key

Privacy

85 % – Very Good

Privacy is where things get a little tricky with MEGA. Most users will have nothing to fear and their data should be safe with MEGA. However, MEGA’s sordid past has been mired in controversy from the day it was founded, and its relation to “pirate king” Kim Dotcom can be worrying for some.

MEGA’s servers are located in Canada, New Zealand and several European Union countries. This means that MEGA has to comply with the GDPR, a law that protects your data. MEGA further extends GDPR protections to all of its users, even those residing outside of the EU.

MEGA has spread out its server network like this to prevent a government of any single country issuing a takedown of its servers, as a precautionary measure to avoid something like what happened to Megaupload, its predecessor site.

Is MEGA.nz Safe?

MEGA’s privacy policy states that even though MEGA has access to some of your data, it will not use it in any way other than to provide its services to you. This means that it won’t give or sell your sensitive information to third parties, unless it is requested in a court subpoena by law enforcement.

Note that MEGA never has full access to your data, owing to its client-side encryption. Plus, even if MEGA was forced by law to hand over your data, it is all encrypted by its zero-knowledge service. MEGA does hold onto some data, though. This amounts to metadata about your MEGA usage, including:

  1. Information about login times
  2. The IP addresses of the devices you use to access MEGA
  3. Browser types and operating systems of those devices
  4. File sizes, versioning order, parent-child relationships
  5. Various timestamps, such as timestamps for when files are created or deleted
  6. The email address of anyone you have contacted on MEGA, including people you’ve added as contacts and people you’ve shared data with via MEGA’s sharing function
  7. The email address of anyone you’ve contacted using MEGA’s chat system
  8. Your account settings, including your avatar

This data doesn’t amount to much, but it’s enough to discern whether a user is breaking MEGA’s terms of service or any copyright laws. The latter is especially important because MEGA receives around 100 Digital Millennium Copyright Act takedown notices each day.

MEGA doesn’t keep any of your login data, with the exception of your email, so your password is unknown to them. If you ever lose your login info, you can use a recovery key to regain access to your account. You receive your recovery key when you create your account, and you can download it as a TXT file.

MEGA.nz, Kim Dotcom and China

MEGA.nz was founded by Kim Dotcom in January 2013, but by September that same year he had stepped down as director, and by 2015 he had cut all ties with the company. Since then, he has made several outlandish claims about MEGA being taken over by a Chinese fraudster, Hollywood executives, the New Zealand government and even the government of China.

MEGA has refuted these claims, but some of his accusations do hold water. The Chinese fraudster in question is William Yan, who held an 18.8-percent stake in MEGA, but had his shares seized by New Zealand authorities under charges of money laundering.

Yan’s stakes were transferred to a New Zealand law firm that represented Zhao Wu Shen — MEGA’s largest shareholder and a donor of the New Zealand National Party. Shen sold all of his New Zealand property following the incident with Yan and transferred his MEGA shares to Li Zhi Min, a Beijing businessman, who now owns 43 percent of MEGA’s shares.

What all of this means is that a large portion of MEGA’s stock is now held by people under the influence of the Chinese government, which isn’t particularly known for respecting people’s right to privacy. Although this shouldn’t pose a problem for most users, there are some who aren’t comfortable with foreign entities possibly having access to their data.

Luckily all of your files are encrypted, so not even MEGA can actually access your sensitive data. This means you should have no worries about China’s President looking at your cat pictures.

Customer Support

75 % – Good

MEGA is somewhat lacking in the customer service department. It has a help center for frequently asked questions, but if you can’t find an answer there, you can contact customer support via email.

You can use the help center to find answers to most questions, which are neatly categorized into sections about the various apps and services, and then even further divided into topics. The help center is fairly comprehensive, and there are image guides for most articles there.

16_mega_review_customer_support_help

The only way to actually contact a customer service representative is through email. Though MEGA offers 24/7 email support, response times can vary. It claims to respond within 24 hours, but a whole day of waiting may be too much for some users, and chat support would be a great improvement.

Also missing from its customer support service are phone support and a forum where users can discuss issues among themselves. It could take a page from Google Drive, which has a wealth of customer support options available at all times.

The Verdict

Despite all of the drama surrounding it, MEGA remains a solid cloud storage service. With its strong dedication to privacy and security, it is one of the safest cloud services around. Plus, all of its security features are available for free, so you don’t have to pay extra for its encryption services.

MEGA’s free plan is very generous, with an upgradeable 15GB of storage, making it one of the best free cloud services. It only lacks some minor features, and its ample storage is enough to satisfy most users’ needs.

However, if you need more storage than what the free plan offers, MEGA’s prices can be prohibitive. You may be better off with a service like Sync.com, which offers much of MEGA’s functionality, at a lower price and without the attached controversy.

What are your thoughts on MEGA? Is all the drama enough to scare you away, or is all that free encrypted storage just too good to pass up? Let us know in the comments below. Thank you for reading our full MEGA review.

MEGA FAQs

  • Is MEGA Cloud Storage Safe?

Yes, the encryption used and its privacy policy mean that your files are safe from harm by third parties. Do keep in mind, though, that your files may be deleted by MEGA itself when your free 35GB of space runs out.

  • Is MEGA Free?

Yes, 15GB of space is free. 35GB of the 50GB you're originally offered runs out after six months, so don't count on it sticking around forever.

  • Is MEGA Legal?

Yes, absolutely. The original founder, Kim Dotcom, was and is in a tight spot with law enforcement, but he's no longer on the MEGA team. The service is as clean as a whistle.

  • Is MEGA Reliable?

Depends on who you ask. We had only minor issues when using it ourselves, but some of the commenters underneath this review tell a different story. It seems to be a case of drawing the short straw.

I’m afraid to trust this company. It’s like sending your money to the bank, trusting that they will keep it safe, but then they tell you you can’t access your account anymore. What’s the purpose of trusting them in the first place?

        2. Lose the password, you can reset it – no problem. Only if you have the encryption key. Lose that too and you are locked out of your account forever.
But kudos to Mega, they offered to set me up with a new account with the same email id. Thankfully, I had the encryption key scribbled down in a postit.

  3. Forget Mega. To test, I created a free 50 GB account and tried to upload a 3 gb file. Upload speed was just under 60kb/s. The same speed that the 56k dial-up modems had about 25 years ago.

To upload a 3 gb file takes 15 hours provided the connection is not broken.

    1. Lol you are a goose, 60KILBYTES a second is not the same as 56k dialup, which was 56KILOBITS. 15 hours to upload a 3gb file is not the issue of Mega, who have plenty of up and down bandwidth, it is an issue of your own upstream bandwidth which is obviously low. Check with your internet service provider. If it was dialup speeds it would take a month to upload that much..

  5. Mega is a great service, the only problem with the free accounts are the limits, until they kick in the max speed I got is 100mbit in download and 120mbit in upload. When the limits kick in (when you reach 10GB per day limit), the speed can drop to 80kb/s, or even stop working. Love the encrypted idea, kinda feel like my files are safe, even tho I lost about 600GB of files to KimDotCom’s last megaupload failure, that is why I’m not excited about buying a subscription for more GB.

Very crazy fast to upload and has the only option missing from all other cloud storage service: we can choose which folder we want to upload to the cloud and not only the default sync folder. So it’s kind of a backup cloud service too.

Problem was when I got to three of the five I wanted to put on here it kept giving me a message that it wanted to “Permanently” load data on my hard drive. I’m trying to relieve my hard drive and they want to put more on it. No thanks.

    Trying to upload 50 GB.
It took, whole day to complete 1 GB so far. The performance is too slow!!!!!!!!!
Not sure, if its because of encryption.
I wish the performance is better to make me use it every day.

But, its similar to any other cloud, on simplicity.

Yet to try the support to make a comment on that.

  13. i dont recommend their service and here is why:
i signed up for their 2tb plan. their platform is easy to use, especially with the drag and drop. however, after uploading a couple of folders, i conducted a comparison between both (uploaded and locally stored) and found out that the size doesnt match at all!
i emailed their support. very unreliable support service thats available on “bankers hours”!
paying 20 euros for a plan that isnt backed up by available support is just a waste of time.
i am still searching for a cloud service that provides real unlimited plans or anything above 2tb of storage.

    1. The size reported for the uploaded file may not mean it has not been stored correctly or completely. The reported size of a file depends on a lot of factors, including the possibility that the web site actually runs compression on the stored content to save disk space. If you do a bit of reading about how files are stored, you may discover that the reported size on disk may not really reflect the actual number of bytes in the information contained in the file. I shall not go into the extensive topic of how data is stored, but you can research it for yourself.

Did you try to down-load the file to your computer (in a separate storage location, so it does not overwrite the original) and run a comparison with the original? This exercise might allay some of your concerns… Sometimes a bit of testing and some knowledge about how computer storage is done and reported by a directory listing can help allay your fears.

Study a bit, then re-evaluate your concerns.

Your concern about the size reported may or may not be a real issue… Check it out.

  15. I loved it… easy upload, etc etc. All the good stuff. But twice now, within a month, I’ve been locked out of my account and no way to get in. These are photos I’ve moved from my computer to regain storage space. No way would I ever use Mega again. I’m currently in a situation where I get an error message saying I don’t have the correct Firefox extension. But I do… I downloaded it yet again. But still, I get an error message saying Mega is not accessible for me. Have I lost all the photos I stored there? I still don’t know the answer to that. This is infuriating!!

    1. You have to remember the password. If not, please find your encryption key which you got during registration I guess. That’s the only way Mega kept it to support security which means they also cannot access it without these! What you can also do is reset account. But then it will delete all the data on cloud and create new account with same Email ID.
Good luck finding the password or the key 🙂

    2. I know this is 4 years later, but for anyone else, Google does allow for “free” upload of images if you use their “high quality” option, as in it takes no space and it uses a compression algorithm on images that’s perfectly fine for home users.

Mega seems very weird in download speeds, first part fill fly at 4-6MB/s, then the last 2% will crawl at 2-3KB/s, as though it actually never managed to reach that 4-6MB/s and is now trying to play catch-up… I should actually check whether the network was actually bursted.

  16. I use MEGA to backup and Sync my files alot. I’ve been using it for a good 6+ months now so I guess I can give you the good/bad/ugly

Firstly, MEGA is by no means a perfect service. It has flaws. I would say that generally speaking however, 8/10 times in daily use, what I expect and what I get are the same thing; my files accessible, and at a reasonable speed.

OK, now to list the problems that occur 2/10 times I use MEGA
    – sometimes when I share a file with a friend, the weird Web interface does not work with my friends browser
    – sometimes the pc sync client incorrectly says it is up to date, failing to detect I have created/modified inside of synced folders
    – randomly from the Android client I get ‘file temporarily unavailable’ this seems to fix itself given 10 mins or so but can be annoying
    – customer support is hit and miss, sometimes you get a reply, sometimes you don’t
    – modified file gets replaced by old file by sync client, especially with Blender files for some reason, for this reason I started always saving with incremented file names like doc1 doc2 to prevent this from happening

My other complaints is that the Sync client is a bit alienating, unclear when it has updated and not telling you what has changed

Even with all these problems I still choose MEGA because of their dedication to security which to me is the most important factor of consideration for cloud storage

    1. In fact, a mid 19th Century telegraphist is simply not able to transfer your files faster using Morse code than Mega, a cloud storage and file hosting service offered by Mega Limited, an Auckland-based company, as simply even loading the landing page containing the link to the downloadable file would require inhuman amount of work and hours of input and transmission of Morse code from the aforementioned telegraphist to transmit the data contained within the download page to you to achieve even remotely comparable results, thus revealing the lingering fact that just because you lack the technological know-how to operate a personal computer in an acceptable fashion does not mean that the internet service Mega Limited, an Auckland-based company provides would ultimately be lackluster or unusable by the average user.

People moaning about slow uploads… Have you ever tried uploading 50GB of data on a Gb LAN ? Get real. Add to the fact that your PC is having to encrypt every file before uploading. Even if you had 100Mbps up-stream on your broadband that’s going to take hours to upload on a multi-hop encrypted file over an encrypted (SSL) data stream.
It’s not somewhere to store all your movies. or to ren a back-up of your PC to, it’s a secure storage for “sensitive” files and it’s AWESOME

  32. I established a new free Mega account yesterday, and experienced nothing but troubles in trying to sync the cloud with only a 136MB of initial data!

Upload speeds were extremely slow (taking 3-4 seconds for 4KB gif files!), other simple files (e.g., a 69KB PDF file) caused the sync to hang, and worst, after supposedly syncing a folder with over 3,000 small files (Mega says syncing was complete; I reinitiated it, and it said the same thing) the cloud storage was still over 500 files short!

I was a former user of DropBox, and switched to Copy.com several years ago, and had absolutely no problems with either (unfortunately, Copy.com is discontinuing its service as of May 1). Initial setup and syncing for both were a breeze and automatic. Mega is slow and error-prone – I spent the last entire day attempting to have it (un)successfully sync only 136MB of files that Copy.com synced in just a few minutes!

I cancelled my Mega account in less than 24 hours.

  33. Having done lots of research on the topic of cloud storage, my conclusion is that if you want your files to be completely secure, there are currently few other options as safe as MEGA. An interesting interview in this regard (conducted by cloudwards) can be found here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vJEzH3RPC9A.

As for the upload and download speeds, I’ve compared them with Dropbox, Livedrive, Spideroak and Sync.com and found them to be the fastest (I’m based in Southern Germany).

Even though PayPal, VISA and MasterCard have recently put pressure on MEGA regarding their zero knowledge policy (the US wants to have access to all our personal files and would therefore do almost anything to destroy platforms such as MEGA), MEGA did NOT change its security and encryption policies, thereby even accepting that PayPal no longer offers its services to them. That’s why I believe MEGA deserves our support now more than ever!

  34. Generally seems good – but beware of Syncing issues that delete data.

I just moved a whole load of files from Dropbox over to MEGA, by dropping them in a folder synced to mega. Speed was excellent (using University wifi in northern England).

Last night I checked every folder had the correct number of files.
I noticed this morning that some folders I moved within the local mega sync folder had completely vanished, along with all their content, and 2 files had zero file size. Even after I forced MEGASync to scan.

I had to restore them from Dropbox ‘recently deleted’, a feature that is not available on MEGA. (MEGA does have a trash can, but files moved out of the MEGASync folder, or deleted from a local synced folder don’t appear in it, unlike Dropbox, which even allows you to restore old versions of files that have changed). I found Dropbox utterly reliable, always syncing within seconds. MEGA sometimes syncs so quickly I don’t even notice the spinning syncing logo appear; but often it just sits there saying it’s up to date when it is not. A few minutes later it might start chugging away.

Conclusion: massive free space, and secure; but Dropbox is way more solid & reliable at syncing.

Otherwise the right and or wrong file would need to be downloaded to view and check it before working on or modifying it. Even better if Mega could work with OpenOffice or MS or Google apps to work on the file while in the Mega browser (someday). But at lease being able to Preview would get a big help!

A few times it Will kinda stall on an upload but I think that was just poor interaction with the gui because it would show no progress and then all of a sudden be complete. Also never had a missing file either. I’ve been using it for about 2 years now I think.
I honestly prefer the mobile android version over the pc one just because it’s a lot more user friendly.
I do have advice for anyone uploading huge files though. My suggestion is that you zip your files, one huge file will upload and download quicker than like a thousand small separate ones.
Also, I think it’s safe to assume that those who are subjected to such slow speeds should probably not blame mega specifically. There are a few things you should take into consideration like firewalls and your internet settings before blaming mega. I only say this because so many people my self included think the speeds are great. Sure, Maybe mega isn’t the most universally grand service but I think you might want to consider it’s purpose, security. It doesn’t promise everyone’s set up will be compatible, though it would be nice it promises safety. On top of that 50gb for free is a hell of a deal.
Well there’s my 2 cents ciao.

  46. I am about to quit using mega, I am currently looking at alternatives. Initially I fond the syncing brilliant, although it takes ages to complete the first sync, sometimes days if it is a large folder. One first sync is over new or updated files in the sync are upload almost instantly. My big problems are when I lost a few discs which affected two syncs, for one of syncs I was able to recover the data from the disc except for a few files, the other I could not. I recreated folders on a new machine and configured folders to sync with the mega folders, I expected the mega syncs to restore missing files. Both syncs reported that there were pending downloads, 10 in one case and 29000 in other but neither ever completed. With mega browser interface you can select a folder to download. The folder file download did not seem to do anything, the download folder as zip file also had issues. Initially the folder I wanted to download was 4.5gb and when attempting to download it warned you that it would create a zip64 file but then did not appear did show it was doing something on by showing a percentage complete on tab heading, after 6 hour it had reached 17% and then stopped. I realised there was a sub folder that I no longer required a deleted this sub folder from the mega backup. The brought the size of backup down to 3.95gb when I then tried to download folder as a zip it did not give me message regarding zip64 but surprised me to start downloading the zip file. It did take 2 hours to complete the download. Normally I would expect to download a 4gb file in under an hour. If you ever want to recover a really large sync folder, I would suspect you would find it almost impossible. The 10 files in other sync I could identify and download individually. I have only used free version, I do not know if things are better if you pay but I am looking for something better.

Mega detected this as a deleted file and passed it to the “Debris” section. This way I could recover this file perfectly. This is a feature (Debris) I had never used before, I’m usually very careful.

But now that I needed it, to have it so perfectly organized and secure, I can only say

  49. One of the best and apparently most overlooked features is REAL SELECTIVE SYNC!
You can choose which *existing* folders you want to sync, it doesn’t force you to put everything into one specific folder.
AFAIK, this is severely lacking in other cloud storage services, only Sugarsync and Copy.com had this feature, but that’s gone or for a fee now.

  50. I have not tried MEGA, but wanted to learn about it, so I have read all the posts, here. My reactions are:
    – For serious file back-up and security of your files, it is likely much more wise to purchase a physically small hard drive with some good, reliable back-up software and use that drive, which is not vulnerable to “cloud” file-storage changes of rules or idiosyncracies, and the price is reasonable enough, considering the alternatives.
    — Then, unplug it after each back-up session and store it in a safe place until needed for another back-up or restore session. Large capacity drives, such as the WD Passport 3Tb drive, offer a good amount of secure (if you use it properly) and reliable back-up for around 100USD, and is not subject to the whims of on-line (cloud) storage companies or hackers, when used wisely.

    – For file sharing, MEGA looks good, but caution in what is stored, how it is stored and maintaining both the original file(s) in a safe, locally accessible place, such as on a back-up drive mentioned above, and using reasonable caution about keeping good records for your access to the account and the files stored there. [Keep good records of passwords, web address and what is being stored, in a safe place or places (more than one copy is wise).]

If you are concerned about others either gaining access to your files or other information, putting that stuff in a publicly accessible place that is the target of a lot of hackers and others, such as NSA, etc. is not the most reasonable thing to do. Remember that if you stick your chin out far enough, you are inviting someone to try to hit it for you and “on line” is an excellent place for some anonymous person or agency to cause you some real pain!

My test show that upload to Mega is between 500KB per second and 750KB per second. I was able to transfer a 1GB file in about 30 minutes.

Downloads are nothing short of incredibly fast using the Mega App on the PC. It topped my downstream speed at 35MB per second!!! Yes 35 megabytes of data every second!!!

I’ve been using Mega for years alongside Dropbox on all my platforms (Windows, Linux, Android). Overall, a bit slower transfers than Dropbox because it can’t update in blocks or de-duplicate, thanks to zero-knowledge, but otherwise it’s practically identical to Dropbox without the pointless (for me) collaboration tools. The only think missing oddly is two-step verification. I am guessing it will be added soon.

The major advantage of Mega is zero-knowledge as a matter of principle and compliance with EU’s GDPR and other data protection requirements.

The Linux app just works – no fuss, no fiddling, no pain. YEAHHHHH!!! Finally, a cloud service that integrates across all the systems i used. As dropbox has pulled back from Linux lately, nice to see Mega raising the bar. Thanks Mega!!

  64. – Apparently used to be good and give a bunch of storage, now it gives only a small amount of what it used to.
    – Very laggy and slow.
    – Throttles medium and large files.
    – Very Important Point: YOUR FILES ARE NOT SAFE WITH THIS SERVICE. They will delete your files without warning (even when they are completely harmless and legal), plus their Terms of Service are really vague.

Overall what turns this mediocre host into downright the absolute worst is the last point.

    I repeat DO.NOT.USE.THIS.SERVICE

  65. You’d be better off printing everything you would have Uploaded to mega and after printing everything that’s extremely sensitive put everything in a box and leave it open with a sign said”Free”. That’s mega for you. My account everything in settings, CHANGE, PIN code GONE. HALF of my Photos and Videos are missing and moved around. Mega is LIERS and Thieves and CROOKED

    1. Maybe that’s just you, Iv’e been using Mega for these past few years (2 years maybe) and i didn’t experience loosing my files. I have 1342 music files and i check it everyday. Nothing really happen. I just think someone like your friends or someone you know, knows your password and trying to mess with your account. Also for my opinion, Mega is easy to use, and essential, It’s really secure so if your files just so happens to disappear, it’s possible it could be just your friends or someone you know. Don’t just accuse that they’re lying and calling them thieves because you don’t even know if they really did delete your photos. Or just maybe you forgot that you changed your setting or just deleted your photos or just forgot to back your photos up. The only problem it has is it’s slow, and the prices should be better, and you should be able to edit files and things like it.

  66. Though MEGA doesn’t have block-level sync, which speeds up transfers to the cloud by only moving changes that have occurred in uploaded files, a company representative told us in an email that the feature is in the works.

How can this work? Mega is using zero knowledge…

  67. Has anyone considered the ownership of mega.nz? I can see it’s 99.83% owned by a shell company in Hong Kong and given previous ownership by dodgy Chinese businessmen I am concerned they could lean on the NZ based team to capture passwords/keys via dodgy Javascript. Maybe I’m just being paranoid!

    1. These “Chinese Buisnessmen” only owned shares in the company, which have since been seized by the NZ government.

  68. I wish I have red comments on this site before I instaled mega on my laptop and backuped my files. I have lost more than 10GB of very important documents in backup proces, folders were simply overwritten with empty folders, I couldn’t recover my files with Recuva or any other recovery softwares. I know it was my mistake I haven’t performed backup on external drive or make restore point before I tried mega, but after using google drive for many ears I thought this could be similar. Only reason I did not use google drive is because I could not purchase it from my country and 17GB I have on this drive are almost full with my gmail data. When I realised what happened I have deleted my mega account immediately and I am pretty sure I will not open new one again.

  69. Hi there. Not sure if the site moderators are still monitoring this article. Is it true that Mega deletes files if you don’t check into your free account every now & then? If true, what is the time-limit before they start deleting files? It has happened to me, and I never received any warning message/email prior to that. Thanks

  70. The free version gives you 50gb for a few weeks then you must pay otherwise files are deleted.
You can only download 1 gb then you must wait 6 hours before trying again. It will pause between sessions. It does not support Firefox and insists on installing megasyc desktop if you use ff. the chrome add on does nothing. Basically it looks good until you want to download or share files then it costs.

  71. MEGA has been great over the last few months, a hefty 15GB free although transfer amount can be limited but hasn’t been a problem for me. Great support on Windows, Mac and Linux along with great apps for iOS and Android to allow you to access your storage anywhere. An extra bonus is all of the applications are open source, with the code on their GitHub page, if that is important to you.

  72. Mega.nz has server side speed limit which they never admit
Server side transfer speed limit, unprofessional customer support and dishonest policy.

Please keep walking if you never complain about their transfer speed. if you think what you paid for is good enough for 10mbytes/s then just ignore this review.

I am a customer from Australia. I pick Mega because they are New Zealand company which I thought it could be very good. I’ve been with MEGA.NZ for 1 year for their business account. I can honestly tell you their service is going down. They never admit they have server-side transfer speed limit, instead they shift the problem to customers’ internet issue. Sorry this trick might work for some standard customers with small plan, but I do not buy it. They asked me to open speedtest.net to choose Datacentre Luxembourg S.A for speed test where I assume their server is. I know our local server in Australia wouldn’t perform good to that location and they would say “that’s your network problem”
    So,
I picked 2 dedicated 1G port servers in our Germany node and Finland Node and both give the result around 400Mbit download and 900Mbit upload, which is equal to 400/8=50Mbtye/s and 112Mbtye/s. which means the communication is very smooth between the datacentres where my servers are and their storage datacentre in Luxembourg. I opened web mega, transfer speed for a 5G file is like 10Mbtye/s , the other one is 8Mbtye/s. How could that be possible? ok. I picked another server of ours in Luxembourg a few kms away from their datacentre giving a speed test result 500Mbit D/ 500Mbit/U, guess what? using they server to transfer a 5G file gives an average speed 5Mbtye/s. The customer service could not comment on this. Instead they said my test result is just a screenshot that is not clear enough. What does that mean? maybe they were never taught their company has hard server-side speed limit. They are trained to shift speed issue to customers’ network. I cannot say all account has the same speed limit because I did not test others. but our business has used only 3.5T in total in 1 year and not doing more than 50G transfer every month.

If you are looking for a storage service provider with more than 10Mbtyes transfer speed. Mega is not your choice. just stay away from this company.

If you are just a user, need 200-500G space for storing iPhone photos, 10Mbtye/s transfer speed is good enough for you.
